In recognition of the dedicated service rendered by the college in the development of women's education, the Government of Puducherry started Post- Graduate courses M.A. English and M.Sc. Botany from the academic year 1997-98 and M.A. History from the academic year 2000-2001. Moreover, B.Sc. in Computer Science was started in 1998-99 and in view of perennial increase in demand of job oriented courses, of late B.Com in Corporate Secretaryship was started from the academic year 2010-2011. Avvaiyar Government College for Women, Karaikal rededicates itself in the overall progress and development of women's education in Karaikal region.

The Department aims at imparting quality education in Computer Science & Engineering and Information Technology through various post-graduate programmes. It also offers an atmosphere conducive for research scholars for pursuing research in various advanced areas of Computer Science, Engineering and Information Technology. The Computer Science students association, PIXEL, provides opportunities to sharpen the skills of students by organizing lectures and students meet. The alumni of the department deliver lectures on latest topics periodically for updating the skill sets of the students.

The department of Computer Science and Technology was founded in 1937 (as the Mathematical Laboratory, and later the Computer Laboratory) for work on mechanical calculators and analogue computers. It became involved in digital computing after 1945 under the direction of Professor Maurice Wilkes. Some of the Cambridge developments of that period belong in the basic stock of computing knowledge, for example the ideas of subroutines and of microprogramming.
